It actually took me a long time to decide who to put for this one. Sure, there are plenty of anime villains that I don’t like, but who would I consider the “best”? In the end I decided to fall back on good old Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and list the homunculi; Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Greed, Wrath, Pride, and Sloth. I think the best of the seven are Envy, Wrath, and Pride.
Envy is one cruel villain; while it’s true that all of the homunculi have zero regard for humans, none of them seem to enjoy human suffering as much as it does. [SPOILERS/] I think Hughes’ death scene really illustrates that; taking Hughes’ wife’s appearance when pulling the trigger was just unnecessary cruelty [\SPOILERS]. When Envy gets really worked up, it’s on the brink of complete and utter insanity, sadistic, and has one of the strongest desires to kill.
Wrath, on the other-hand, is the calm to Envy’s storm. He’s much more organised, and much more of a soldier than Envy ever is. He seems to genuinely enjoy fighting (and I love watching it). Although Wrath share’s Envy’s hatred for humans; getting angry, and well, wrathful, very easily, he’s much more adapted to living towards them, and has a somewhat quirky personality when posing has a human. You can give him credit for pulling off a double life successfully, and fighting to the very, very end.
Finally, we have Pride, who I also like to refer to as “the thing of nightmares”. [SPOILERS/ (on Pride’s identity)] Giving a child the power of darkness is one of the most terrifying things imaginable. I don’t know what it is about the transformation from the sweet and innocent little boy to a thing that can manipulate shadows that just seems to horrify me. [\SPOILERS]. On top of that, he’s such a calculated character, he’s also cruel (poor Gluttony), and treats humans in a taunting, mocking way. Like Wrath, he never seems to really panic, and similarly, he’s determined to win right until the very end.
Together, the homunculi are a mixed bag, with very different personalities and abilities. Amongst them are some of the best, and truly terrifying, anime villains I have ever seen. Definitely wouldn’t want to meet these guys in a dark alleyway.
