WARNING: There are spoilers in this post concerning the ending of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Please do not read if you intend to watch the series.
So if you’ve been reading any of my other posts, my choice for this will not surprise you: everyone vs. Father; the major, final fight in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Although this fight may not be as intense or action-packed as other fight scenes, I still consider it the best because of what it represents for the series. Not only is it the climax of the entire series, you have everyone fighting together; not just chimera, homunculi, and humans, but mixed races; Xingnese, Amestrian, and Ishvalan, as well as people from different sections of the Amestrian military; Brigg soldiers, Central soldiers, and Eastern soldiers. A little bit corny? Yes, but for a series that shows the constant division between all of these different groups, it’s an important moment where, for once, everyone’s on the same side. It allows Mustang and co. to move forward into an era of unity; something he has strived for since he first decided to be on top of the military; something that is only possible because of this fight. To top it all of you have Al with the ultimate sacrifice to save Ed; a reversal of what kicks the story off in the first place; Ed willing to sacrifice himself to bring back Al’s soul. Then Ed finally defeats Father single-handedly; a fitting ending after all that he’s been through. Although it’s not the most action-packed, it is one last chance for the animators to show off all of the different fighting styles and all of the characters.
I was tempted to post a video of the fight, but I think the fight can only be fully appreciated if you’ve seen the whole series, or at least experienced the build-up over the last few episodes. With so much at stake, and everyone involved, I consider this the best fight scene.
